Readers may recall that in October 2012, the Trenton Curling Club hosted a military appreciation day. During the speeches and presentations at that event, Mayor John Williams threw down the gauntlet, and challenged the 8 Wing/CFB Trenton staff to a civvie versus military bonspiel. That bonspiel took place last Friday, as eight members of King John’s round table squared off against an eight member phalanx from 8 Wing.
TCC president Barb Flieler welcomed the warriors, and handed off to VP Julie Rickard for a brief rundown of the rules. The spiel would consist of one six-end game, Silver Tankard rules, which meant that the winner would be decided by the aggregate total of the teams representing each kingdom. Sgt Jim Douglas of the 8 Wing Pipes and Drums then piped the teams to their respective jousting spots on the ice.
It became evident early on that the nifty track suits worn by the CFB team clearly intimidated the Quinte West crew, as both civvie teams gave up four points in the first end. After this first blood thrashing, played settled down into a surprisingly competitive game of curling. There were only two irregularities: First, King John, who, probably not accustomed to taking direction from squires, wandered hither and tither around the ice surface, seemingly not quite sure what his role was; Second, there were no women on contingent, causing Flieler to quip that perhaps both the city and 8 Wing were afraid to be emasculated by women.
After the final rock settled, with an amazing through the port shot by a Quinte West jouster, the aggregate score was woefully lop-sided in favour of 8 Wing. (22-5). However, official scorekeeper Dave Flieler, under the prima endus rule, threw out the first end scores and multiplied the Quinte West points by the mill rate to come up with a more diplomatic score of 13-11. King John presented the first annual Quinte West vs 8 Wing trophy to Col. Sean Friday, and both expressed a desire to make this an annual (and larger) event. We couldn’t agree more.
